5 - Employment Trends in the Study Area

The objective of this working paper is to show trends in employment in different industries in the study area. Two sets of tables and figures are presented to illustrate these trends. Tables 1A through 1D, and figures 1 through 10 show trends in non-farm employment for different labor areas from 1980 to 1999. Labor areas are also called Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSA?s). In some cases, these labor areas consist of several counties. The study area consists of 14 counties that form 7 labor areas as indicated in the following table. Tables 2A through 2D and figures 11 through 26 show trends in private sector covered employment1 in the 14 county study area from 1991 to 1997. Data on non-farm employment in the different labor areas were obtained from the following web site maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor: www.bls.gov. Data on covered employment at the county level were obtained from the New Jersey Data Center: www.state.nj.us/labor/lra/njsdc.htm
