Towards Multiplex or Next Generation Infrastructure

OVERVIEW:

This paper is intended to constitute a crucial chapter in a book that the principal investigator is considering developing. The book’s provisional title is Future-proofing Infrastructure: Principles for Next Generation Public Works. It presents an unusual perspective that the P.I. hopes that she may bring as a thought leader in the policy and practice of sustainability, regarding how we might better conceptualize, design and deliver major infrastructural initiatives.

With its emphasis on cross-disciplinary, multi-sectoral undertakings, it covers infrastructure from a fresh perspective through case studies of exemplary projects. It is intended to be complementary in scope to some of the initiatives described under PlaNYC initiatives in that it simultaneously addresses climate concerns, energy efficiency, water management and other environmental and human health objectives.

The paper (and potential book) is intended to stimulate policy makers as well as the engineering and planning sectors to think more holistically in planning infrastructural initiatives. The chapter’s title is: Towards ‘Multiplex’ Infrastructures.

The mini-grant would support research assistance provided by graduate level interns.
