Dr. Laxmi Ramasubramanian

Dr. Laxmi Ramasubramanian is an Associate Professor of Planning and Design at Hunter College. She is a registered architect in her home country, India, and a certified planner (AICP). She is a member of the doctoral faculty in the Geography Program and the Environmental Psychology Program at The Graduate Center, the doctorate-granting institution of the City University of New York. In 2009, Anna University, Chennai, India appointed her as a Visiting Professor. Dr. Ramasubramanian seeks to inform and transform planning practice in order to create a just and equitable society. Specifically her research examines how the use of digital technologies such as GIS can alter social and political processes, particularly the power of individuals and institutions to create and sustain social change. Dr. Ramasubramanian is an expert in the design, implementation and evaluation of participatory planning projects that use affordable and accessible digital technologies. She has recently completed a book Geographic Information Science and Public Participation, published by Springer-Verlag. Dr. Ramasubramanian’s maintains an active research program with funding from a range of public and nonprofit sources. She is the Vice President and President-Elect of The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS), a coalition of over 70 universities.
