The University Transportation Research Center (UTRC), for Region 2 (NY, NJ & Puerto Rico), held a NYC Mayoral Candidates’ Transportation Forum at Baruch College on June 19th, moderated by Distinguished Lecturer and former NYC Taxi & Limousine Commissioner Matthew W. Daus, Esq. Since that time, the UTRC forum has inspired every candidate to issue comprehensive transportation policy plans and platforms.

In late 2012, the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (the “TLC”) proposed rules to allow for smartphone applications to be used with taxicabs – the “E-Hail Rules.”

UTRC welcomed seven master’s degree-level students with specialties in sustainable transportation and civil engineering from the Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’Etat (ENTPE) in Lyon, France, which is a highly competitive engineering school in France.

The vision for the National Climate Assessment (NCA) is to create a system of indicators that will help inform policy-makers and citizens understand key aspects of our changing climate. Scientific information about physical climate conditions, climate impacts, vulnerabilities, and preparedness will be tracked and compiled. These measures are called indicators.

On May 8th, the White House honored twelve people as Transportation “Champions of Change.” This Champions event, “Transportation Technology Solutions for the 21st Century,” focused on individuals or organizations that have provided exemplary leadership in developing or implementing transportation technology solutions to enhance performance, reduce congestion, improve safety, and facilitate communication across the transportation industry at the local, state or national level.

Dr. Alberto M. Figueroa Medina, associate Professor from the Civil Engineering and Surveying Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM) has been appointed by the Governor of Puerto Rico as President and General Manager of the Metropolitan Bus Authority (MBA).

Applications are now being accepted for the UTRC 2013 Advanced Institute for Transportation Education (AITE) Program, a scholarship program with a competitive application process.

The University Transportation Center Region 2 (UTRC) was recently honored with two awards from the Volvo Research Education Foundations (VREF) to become VREF Centers of Excellence (CoE) on Urban Freight.
