Kirk Barrett

Dr. Kirk Barrett has served as an assistant professor with Manhattan College’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department since 2011. Previously he served as the first director of the Passaic River Institute at Montclair State University for seven years and as the research director of the Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute of Rutgers University for 5 years. As a registered Professional Engineer and certified Professional Wetland Scientist, Barrett has more than has 25 years’ experience in the field of water resources, specializing in surface/wetland hydrology, hydraulics and water quality processes.

In addition, he has served as a Principal Investigator on projects funded by major federal research agencies including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Geological Survey. Barrett’s projects have also received funding from state agencies (the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection), and private foundations (Victoria Foundation and Landsberger Foundation).

His findings have been published in respected scientific journals such as Journal of Soil and Water Conservation, Water International, Ecological Engineering and Marine Pollution Bulletin. Barrett has been an invited speaker many times, including at Princeton and Columbia Universities, and has co-chaired several state and regional professional scientific conferences.
