Dr. Ricardo A. Daziano, Assistant Professor at Cornell University, received an NSF Award for his project; Advanced Demand Estimators for Energy-Efficiency in Personal Transportation

In January 2013, Dr. Daziano received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award, for his proposal “Advanced demand estimators for energy-efficiency in personal transportation.” He will receive $ 409,565 in NSF CAREER funding over 5 years to support my research on decision-making analysis to better understand consumer behavioral response to energy-efficient engineered technologies, such as battery-electric vehicles. The demand estimators that will be derived as part of this project will serve to evaluate not only pricing and investment strategies for advanced energy-efficient propulsion technologies and infrastructure, but also public policies and incentives to best promote industry conversion to and consumer acceptance of ultra-low-emission vehicles. The results will be significant not only for US policymakers and transportation planners, but also for informing auto manufacturers to improve how industry engineers vehicles.

(The CAREER award is the NSF’s most prestigious honor for exceptional young researchers who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.)

Abhishek Singhal, Ph.D. Student at CCNY received the 2012 UTC Student of the Year award at CUTC Banquet

Abhishek Singhal, a Ph.D. student in the Transportation program at the City College of New York and a research assistant at UTRC was presented the 2012 UTC Student of the year award at the CUTC Banquet at 2013 TRB meeting, held on January 17-23 at Washington, DC. Abhishek was selected on the basis of his technical merit, research and academic performance.

Mr. Singhal was honored with others from around the country at a special ceremony held during the 2013 TRB Annual Meeting. The CUTC awardee receives the $1000 plus the cost of attendding the TRB conference and CUTC Banquet ceremony and a certificate from USDOT.

Dr. Xuegang (Jeff) Ban, Assistant Professor at RPI recieved the CUTC –ARTBA New Faculty Award

Dr. Xuegang (Jeff) Ban, an assistant professor of the Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Renssalear Polytechnic Institute was awarded the 2012 New Faculty Award by the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) and American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). The CUTC/ARTBA New Faculty Award is given annually to a tenure-track faculty member in transportation education. The award purpose is to recognize outstanding teaching and research contributions to the transportation field.

Dr. Yusuf Mehta, Associate Professor at Rowan University received the 2012 AIAA-IEEE Aviation Research Award

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) presented Dr. Yusuf Mehta with the Aviation Research award at the AIAA-IEEE-ITEA 16th Annual “Engineer of the Year” Awards Banquet, held on November 29, 2012.The research study was able to identify and quantify the key parameters that affect load transfer efficiency, which was not well understood prior to this research. This is critical in understanding LTE and designing of pavements.

Louis J. Pignataro, 2012 Memorial Transportation Engineering Education Award

Congratulations to Dr. Yusuf A. Mehta, professor of Transportation Engineering at Rowan University, who is the 2012 awardee. Professor Mehta was nominated by Ralph Alan Dusseau, Ph.D., P.E.; DRBA Professor and Founding Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Program at Rowan. Dr. Dusseau’s four page recommendation letter described Dr. Mehta’s achievements in Quality, Impact, Student - Focused Transportation Engineering Research, and Engineering Education. The award was presented at 2013 ITE Met Section meeting. The award was for outstanding record of achievement in transportation engineering research, and undergraduate and graduate engineering education.

2012 New Jersey DOT Research Implementation Award

Dr. Yusuf Mehta received an award for 2012 Research Showcase Implementation Award at the RAC Meeting in Burlington, VT on July 22 2012. His project titled: High RAP in HMA High Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in Hot Mix Asphalt project, funded by New Jersey Department of Transportation was one of the sixteen projects out of 120 that were selected for the 2012 High Value Research Award by the AASHTO Research Advisory Committee (RAC). A poster presentation was also given in Transportation Research Board Meeting in January 2013.

Ryuichi Kitamura The 2012 Transportation Research Board Paper Award

Dr. Rachel Weingberger was awarded with the TRP Ruichi Kitamura Award for her paper,
“Integrating Walkability into Planning Practice”   by Rachel Weinberger and Matthias N. Sweet

The Kitamura Paper Award

The travel behavior and modeling community lost a great thinker and researcher with the passing of Professor Ryuichi Kitamura on February 19, 2009. In honor of his commitment to student success and co-authorship of papers, the Travel Analysis Methods Section (ADB00) of the Transportation Research Board has instituted the Ryuichi Kitamura Award for the Best Paper by a Student co-authored with a Mentor. In the event that you missed the award presentation that took place at the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in January, we are pleased to announce that the third (2012) winner of the TRB Travel Analysis Methods Section Kitamura Paper Award is:
“Integrating Walkability into Planning Practice” by Rachel Weinberger and Matthias N. Sweet

See below for details on the presentation of this paper, and see http://www.its.ucdavis.edu/?page_id=13856 for more information about the Kitamura legacy and paper award.
